Det blev ett ögonblicks skymning i rummet. Ett tjockt rökmoln från en
fabriksskorsten drevs av vinden förbi fönstret.

-- Säg, Tomas -- är det riktigt bra att du är  mycket tillsammans med
Johannes Hall?

Tomas blåste ut röken från sin cigarr genom näsan.

-- Kära mamma, jag bör väl vara gammal nog att kunna välja mina vänner
själv.

-- Ja, ja, du bör väl det...

Hon gick tillbaka ut i salen. Tomas hörde henne ta ett tag med
dammhandduken över tangenterna  pianot.

Tomas tänkte  Märta Brehm. Han behövde endast sluta ögonen för att
känna hennes mjuka flickgestalt glida in i rummet, sjunka ned  soffan
vid hans sida och linda armarna om hans hals. Om några år skulle han
vara en berömd läkare med en tjugutusen kronor om året; men han kunde
mycket väl gifta sig redan när han hade fyra eller fem tusen. Vilka
kvällar i skymningen, helst  vintern,  snön yrde kring gathörnen!
Han vågade icke ens tänka  bröllopsnatten. Och vilka middagar de
