En skötöka låg en majafton för bidevind ute  Gåsstensfjärden. Rökarna
med sina i skärgården ökända tre pyramider började blåna, och  den
klara himmeln bildade sig moln, när solen tog till att sjunka; det
skvalpade redan utanför uddarna, och obehagliga ryckningar i råseglet
antydde, att landvinden snart skulle bryta sig mot nyväckta luftdrag
ovanifrån, utifrån, bakifrån.

Vid rodret satt tulluppsyningsmannen  Österskären, en kämpe i svart,
långt helskägg, och tycktes  och  byta ögonkast med de två
vaktmästarne, som sutto föröver och av vilka den ena skötte klostången,
som höll det stora råseglet i vinden.

Emellanåt kastade rorsmannen en undersökande blick  den lilla herren,
som satt hopkrupen vid masten och syntes rädd och frusen och  och 
drog schalen hårdare om magen och underlivet.

Tullkarlen måtte ha funnit honom löjeväckande, ty han vände sig titt och
ofta i  för att med tobakssaliven liksom spotta bort ett hotande
skratt.

Den lilla herren var klädd i en bäverfärgad vårrock, under vilken ett
par vida benkläder av mossgrön trikå framstucko, öppnande sig nertill
